Year 2 Daily Challenge!

Good Morning Year 2.  I have attached the answers to yesterday's Word Search.  Open up the document to see if you managed to find all of the words!

Today’s activity is Science.

I would like you to go on a Materials Hunt around your home.  To learn more about what Materials are I have attached a Materials Power Point for you to read.  There are also clips to watch on Espresso.

Log onto the web site www.discoveryeducation.co.uk

then use the Username: 31263 and the password: thornhill.

In the search engine type in Materials and then select the video titled Properties of Materials.  There are other things you can go on to find out more about Materials in this section.  When you feel confident, walk around your home and see what is made out of these materials in your home.  Draw a picture and label what you find.  I have attached a proforma for you to use to record what you find but if you don’t have a printer don’t worry you can draw what you find in your Homework Book.

Don't forget to keep looking in your Minibeast Hotel, if you made one, to see if you have any visitors!

Have a fantastic Hunt everyone!

Bonjour Everyone!

Let’s have some fun reading!

As part of the Booktrust’s Pyjamarama day, I thought it would be fun to join in. It’s really easy!

1. Stay in your pyjamas.

2. Share your favourite stories with your family members.

(Adults encourage your children to retell the story using the pictures and use their phonic knowledge to find sounds and words that they know).

3. Draw the front cover of your favourite book and/or write a simple book report telling us what you like about the book, what you didn’t like about the book, who was your favourite character and draw a picture of your favourite part of the story.

Have Fun! and Happy Reading!!!

Year 2 Daily Challenge!

Good morning Year 2.
Well done to all of those children who solved the money problems yesterday.  I really enjoyed looking at your photographs showing how you made the different totals.
Today's Activity is Reading.
I have attached a Word Search and in the Word Search are 15 of our special Year 2 words.  Your challenge is to find them!  They might be going up, down, across or diagonally.  I have not included the actual list of words for you to find because that will be too easy, I would like you to try and find them all by yourself.  I will post the answers tomorrow.  If you do not have a printer, do not worry just write the words that you find in your Homework Book and then you can check them tomorrow.
Have fun Word Searchers!

Good Morning Year 1.

Today’s Challenge is: Thursday Handwriting on the 30th of April.

Click on the link below which helps show you how your letters should be formed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iXUU47gvC8

Practise writing your full name with the letters sitting on the line and the capital letters being nice and tall. Practise writing some other words in your best handwriting.

EYFS (2 Year Olds, Nursery and Reception)

Good morning Everyone!
Today's challenge is to play Kim's game with a grown up. Put 5 or 6 small items on the floor - it could be things like an orange, a pencil, toys, etc. Look at them carefully for about 30 seconds. Try and remember them. The grown up will the cover the items with a tea towel or material. Can you name all the items? Next the grown up will take away one item and cover .up the ones that are left. Open your eyes and look, what's missing?
Adults - you can add more items as the child gets better.
This is a good way of developing your child's memory skills and concentration.
Have fun and stay safe.

Year 2 Daily Challenge!

Good morning Year 2.  I have two activities for you to do today.
Activity 1:  I would like you to recap what you already know about keeping safe when online and using technology.  Talk to your grown up about what you already know.  Now go onto the website www.thinkuknow.co.uk , select Ages 4-7, then select Child and Ages 6-7.  There are five sections to read through with your grown up to check that you know how to stay safe when using the internet and what to do if something upsets you or makes you feel uncomfortable.
Activity 2:  I would like you to practise your skill of counting money.  Ask your grown up if they have some coins that you can use, if they don't don't worry because the attached document tells you what real coins there are.  I would like you to have a go at making different totals with the money.  Look at the document attached, can you make the totals of the cuddly toys in 3 different ways?  For example,
9p =
5p + 2p + 2p
2p + 2p + 2p + 2p + 1p
5p + 2p + 1p + 1p
You can either print the sheet or record your different ways in your Homework Book.
When  you have finished, you can continue practising your money skills on Topmarks:  https://www.topmarks.co.uk/money/toy-shop-money

Year 2 Daily Challenge!

Good morning Year 2.  I really enjoyed reading the stories some of you wrote yesterday.
Today's Activity is Art.
I would like you to create a piece of artwork that is created by using natural objects.  A famous Artist called Andy Goldsworthy creates all of his masterpieces using natural materials he finds outside.  After creating his artwork he then leaves it for nature to do with it what it wishes.  I have attached a powerpoint for you to find out a little bit more about Andy Goldsworthy and his work.  I have also attached some photographs of artwork children in Year 2 in the past have created using natural materials they found outside.
So go outside into your garden and create a piece of art using what you find on the ground, on a tree or in a bush.  Let's see what beautiful pieces you create!  You might want to take a photograph of your artwork and send it to me on Class Dojo.
Have fun creating!

Good Morning Year 1.

Today’s Challenge is: Tuesday Fairy Tales on the 28th of April.

Do you remember the story of Jack and the Beanstalk that we looked at last week?

How do you think the Giant felt when Jack kept on stealing his things?

Pretend you are the Giant what would you say to Jack if you caught him?

Can you draw a picture of the Giant and draw a speech bubble and write inside what he might say to Jack.

EYFS (2 Year Olds, Nursery and Reception)

Good Morning Everybody!

I hope you are feeling terrific this Tuesday and that you are ready for your daily Home Learning Challenge?

Great! Let's go!

Today, I would like you to practise putting on your school uniform by yourself. Can you put on and take off your socks/tights, t-shirt / shirt, skirt/trousers and cardigans/jumpers?

Practise doing and undoing your zips and buttons on your coats and jackets. Can you put your shoes on the correct feet?

Reception children could also practise getting dressed ready for PE, something they will be expected to do in Year One.

While getting dressed, you can name items of clothing, body parts, count fingers and toes or discuss left and right.

Parents please encourage and support your children to get themselves dressed and undressed, not only today, but each day. This simple skill will increase their confidence and prepare them better for school.

Good luck and I hope your uniform still fits!!

Year 2 Daily Challenge!

Good morning Year 2.  I hope you have had a lovely weekend at home in the sunshine.  For those children who have made a Minibeast Hotel, did any minibeasts visit your hotel over the weekend?
Today's Activity is English.
I would like you to write a story.  I have attached some pictures from a story that we will be reading when we return to school however I would like you to predict what the story might be all about.  The attached pictures are in the correct order from the story and what I would like you to do is to try and tell the story through prediction.  There is no right or wrong answer, just use your imagination.  Think carefully about how your story will start.  Try and use some adjectives and adverbs (describing words) in your writing.  If you are feeling really clever you might want to use  a simile too; explain to your grown up what a simile is.  Here is your Writing Checklist.
1.. Every sentence must make sense.
 2. Every sentence must start with a tall capital letter.
3. Every sentence must end with a punctuation mark.
4. Check that you have spelt key words correctly.
5. When spelling a word ending in a suffix, write the root word first of all and then decide which spelling rule you will use (just add the suffix, drop the 'e' and add the suffix, double the consonant and add the suffix, change the 'y' to an 'i' and add the suffix).
You can write your story in your Homework Book.
Have fun!

Year 2 Daily Challenge!

Friday 24th April
Good morning everybody,
I hope you all enjoyed learning about Saint George yesterday.  I saw some amazing Coats of Arms Shields.
Today's activity is Design and Technology.
The Minibeasts need your help!  They need you to design a Minibeast Hotel for them to live in.  Look at the following web site to find out what a Minibeast Hotel actually is.
Imagine you have sticks, leaves, old plant pots, twigs, empty plastic bottles that are clean, string; you might have some of these things in your garden or in your home.  How might you use these resources to create a home for a minibeast?  You can draw and label your Minibeast Hotel in your Homework Book.  I have attached some photographs of examples.  If you have some of these resources at home you might want to actually make one.  If you do make a Minibeast Hotel think very carefully about where you will position it in your garden so that minibeasts can access it easily.  Check your Minibeast Hotel every day and record a tally of how many minibeasts and what tyoe of minibeast is using your Hotel.  You might like to send a photograph of your Minibeast Hotel to Class Dojo.

Have fun designing!

Year 2 Daily Challenge!
Thursday 23rd April
Good morning everybody,
I hope that you enjoyed listening to the story yesterday.
Today is Saint George's Day.  Saint George is the Patron Saint of our country England.  Many people celebrate this special day by wearing a red rose on their coat.  I would like you to find out who Saint George was and about his special story.  Read the attached power point about Saint George and the story of Saint George and the Dragon!  You can also watch the story by following the link below:
Did you enjoy the story?  Why did George defeat the dragon?  Why do you think Saint George is the Patron Saint of our country?  What was his special quality?
I have attached several activities that you can choose from.  You might want to do 1 or 2 of them, it is up to you however I am not expecting you to do all of them.  If you do not have a printer, you can do your recording in your Homework Book or on a piece of paper.
  1.  Retell the story using pictures (there is a pro-forma attached).
  2. Imagine you are Saint George and design your very own Coat of Arms Shield.  What special symbol will you have on it?  (there is a pro-forma attached).
  3. Make a dragon puppet or dragon model (see attached ideas).
  4. Solve The Mystery of Saint George's Sword Snatcher (this is attached and parents I have included the answers!)
Remember to just do 1 or 2 of the activities, make sure you enjoy the lovely sunshine in your garden today!
Happy Saint George's Day everyone!

Good Morning Everyone!

Here is Thursday's challenge - can you build yourself a den?

You can use anything you can find: blankets, sheets, pegs, tables, chairs, cushions, pillows, material, boxes, etc.

Let your child's imagination run wild as they pretend to go camping or try to keep warm inside their very own igloo. You could always be the scary animal outside the tent. If you've got a torch don't forget to make some animal shadows too!

You can also use the fabulous dens as a place to share books and stories.

We would love to see photos of your creative dens!

Have fun!.

Year 2 Daily Challenge!

Wednesday 22nd April

Good morning Year 2.  Did you all remember how to solve division problems yesterday?  Those children who sent me their work were amazing at it.  Remember you can send me a photograph of your work on Class Dojo.

Today's Activity is Reading!

Listen to the story 'A Squash and a Squeeze' by Julia Donaldson using the link below.

Can you answer these questions about the story?  You can tell the answers to a grown up or write them, in sentences, in your Homework Book.

  1. Who is the main character in the story?
  2. How would you describe the old lady?
  3. What is the problem in the story and how is it resolved?
  4. What words does Julia Donaldson use in the story that mean the same as 'small'?
  5. Who would you recommend this story to?  Why?
Extension:  What other animal might the old lady invite into her house?  Draw a new page/illustration for the book showing the old lady inviting another animal into her house.  You might like to add some text too.
I hope you enjoy the story!
Remember you can access books on Oxford Owl similar to those that we read in school.  I sent a link on Class Dojo on Monday for this.

Year 1 Daily Challenge

Good Morning Year 1.

Today’s Challenge is: Wednesday Topic on the 22nd of April.

Thinking of all the things around us in our world, do you know which are living or which are non-living things?

Scientists ask some questions to find out if something is living:

They ask…

Does it eat?

Does it move?

Does it breathe?

Does it reproduce?

Can you think of five things that are living and five things that are non-living? Draw these and label them. Click on the links below to help with your understanding. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWBrusrCmX4

EYFS (2 Year Olds, Nursery and Reception)

Good Morning Everybody!
I hope you are safe and looking forward to your Wednesday Challenge?
Today, I invite you to look outside your window, go into your garden, or if you can safely, go on a walk around your local area and see if you can notice any signs of Spring?  What sounds can you hear?  Do you notice any changes to the trees outside? How many seasons are there in a year? Can you spot any butterflies, flowers or signs of new life?
Parents talk to your children about the changes in the seasons, the new life springing up all around us. Why not try creating a Spring inspired picture or collect some natural objects and use these to create some art.
Stay safe and I look forward to seeing how you get on with today's challenge. ❤

Tuesday 21st April

Good morning everybody.  I hope you enjoyed researching Minibeasts yesterday.  Thank you to all of those children who posted a photograph of their work, they were amazing.

Today's Challenge is Maths!

I would like you to practise your skills in Division.

First of all I would like you to go onto:

www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Select Division Facts and practise dividing by 2, 5 and 10 then if you feel brave enough, divide by 3!  If you find it tricky, use a number line to help you solve the calculation like we did in class (see the attachment to remember how to do this).  When you feel confident, then play the game Hit the Button against the timer.  If you get a low score to begin with, don't worry just keep practising!

When you feel confident with your dividing skills, have a go at solving the problems on the Activity Cards attached.  If you don't have a printer don't worry, you can just draw the groups in your Homework Book and record your answer.

Have fun Mathematicians!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5rxfLRgXRE

What was the name of Jacks cow?

Why did they have to sell the cow?

What did Jack get from the old man?

How did his mum feel when he returned home with no money?

What happened the next day?

What was the problem in the story?

What was special about the hen?

Did you enjoy the story? Why or why not?

Your challenge is this

Option 1: What would you want the hen to lay for you? Draw and write a sentence about it.

Option 2: Write a letter to Jacks mum to explain what happened with the cow.

Remember to write in full sentences using capital letters and full stops in the correct places.

EYFS (2 Year Olds, Nursery and Reception)
Tuesdays Home Learning Challenge is using you phonic knowledge to play a game of I Spy. You can play this game inside or outside. Find different things that you can see and give your mum or dad the first sound in the word. If they get it right then they do the same for you.
To make it a little harder, why don’t you try and write down the words of the objects that you can see.
Parents, please allow your child to use their own phonic knowledge to write the different words, and encourage them to use the correct letter formation when writing.
2 Year Olds / Nursery - You might like to play "I Spy" together and talk about some of the things you can see and what sound the words start with.
Happy spying everyone!!

Parents, please encourage the children to look out of a window and talk about what they can see: e.g. trees, the river, shops, etc. you can extend this by using positional language; “There is a bird on the fence.” “The car is in front of the garage.” “The tree is next to the flowerbed.”

Maybe you could draw a picture of the world outside your window?

Enjoy looking at the world outside! Stay safe!

Tuesday 31st March 2020

Year 2 Daily Challenge!
Good morning everybody.

Today's Challenge is Phonics!  I would like you to practise spelling words that end in the suffixes that we have been learning about in school.  For you parents, suffixes are a group of letters that can be added to the end of a word to change its meaning e.g. swim, swimming, tall, taller.

For the challenge, long onto Espresso by searching www.discoveryeducation.co.uk  and click on Espresso.  The Username is:  student31263 and the Password is: Thornhill

Once on, select KS1, English, then Grammar and Punctuation.  When on this page select Word (you may need to scroll down).  Watch the following clips all about adding a suffix to the end of a word.
Adding the suffixes -ness and -er to make nouns
Adding suffixes -ful and -less to make adjectives
Use of the suffixes -er and -est in adjectives
Using -ly to turn adjectives into adverbs

At the end of each clip you can carry out the activities to practise.

Extension:  Rocket Race:  Take one suffix at a time and see how many words you can record that end in this suffix.  Remember that they must be spelt correctly.  Start by writing the root word and then look at the last letters in the root word which then help you choose the correct spelling rule.   Let's recap some of the spelling rules:
  1.  Change the y to an i and add the suffix
  2. Drop the e and add the suffix
  3. Double the consonant and add the suffix
  4. Just add the suffix

Set the online stop watch to 3 minutes www.online-stopwatch.com .  Which suffix were you able to record the most number of words for?  Which suffix was the most trickiest?  What other suffixes have we been learning about?  You can do all of your recording in your Homework Book, it should all fit onto one page.

When you are reading a book, see if you can spot any words in the text that end in a suffix too.

Good luck everyone!
Mrs McNulty

Ask questions about the story as you read it e.g. what is the story about? Why do you think they made that choice? Was it a good choice? Why did that happen? What do you think will happen next? What was your favourite part of the story? Why?

Your Challenge is to design your own runaway food character. It could be anything you like, a runaway cookie, a runaway chapatti or even a runaway pizza! Make sure you add lots and lots of details to your picture. Can you write some adjectives to describe your picture, for example round juicy tomatoes for eyes on your pizza? Whatever it is you draw have fun doing it!

EYFS (2 Year Olds, Nursery and Reception)

Hello Everyone!

I hope you enjoyed the Rainbow Scavenger Hunt?

Today’s home learning challenge is: A Shape Hunt around your house

What shapes can you see around your home? (e.g. circle face on a clock, rectangle windows, etc)

2 Year Olds – you can focus on circles and rectangles

Nursery – can you find these shapes around your home? Circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, ovals?

Reception – Can you find any circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, ovals? How about looking for some 3D shapes (cubes, spheres, cuboids, triangular prisms, pyramids, cones, cylinders) You can even make a tally chart to note down what you have found.

Happy shape hunting! Stay safe!

Year 2 Home Learning Task

Good morning Year 2.  I hope you have been enjoying the lovely sunny weather, although the last few days have been a little bit chilly, and that you have been good for your grown-ups.  Every morning I am going to set you a Challenge to complete.  If you would like to do more, then that is brilliant however please make sure you complete the Challenge I set you first.  You can use your homework book to do any recordings and then when we go back to school we can have a look at what you have been doing.

Todays Challenge:  Monday 30th March is Maths!

I would like you to practise your times tables.  Log onto the web site below, Hit the Button, and have a go at answering the times tables questions for the 1x, 2x, 5x and 10x tables.

www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Remember to use the bar model strategy to solve questions you are unsure of.  If you don't get a high score on your first attempt, don't worry, just try again.  Remember the more you practise, the better you will get!

Extension:  How many of your 1x tables can you record in 5 minutes?  Set the online stop watch below to 5 minutes to time yourself!

www.online-stopwatch.com

E.g. 0 x 1 = 0

       1 x 1 = 1

       2 x 1 = 2

Next, repeat with the 2x, 5x and 10x tables!

If you are feeling brave, now have a look at the 3 times tables.  Good Luck!
